to CMP by either using one of their original two donated FedEx shipments
or by making arrangements with Shepard to use their shipper.

_Shipping Home from CMP
_Teams will be given either a Bill of Lading or airbill at on-site CMP
registration to ship their robot home.

*Making CMP Hotel Reservations *

Please go to the Steele Meetings website at
https://www.e2mevents002.com/client/viewEvent.do?alias=FIRST09 to make
your housing arrangements.

/IMPORTANT I:/  Each season there are teams who make CMP hotel
arrangements in the hopes they will qualify at a regional event.  Teams
that do this do so at their own risk.  _You will be responsible for any
cancellation fees incurred per Steele Meetings Policies._  If you have
any questions, please contact Steele Meetings directly for any further
clarification at: first@steelemeetings.com
<mailto:first@steelemeetings.com>.

/IMPORTANT II:/  DO NOT ship your robot to the CMP event unless you
qualify at your regional event! Teams not registered for the
Championship will be responsible to pay all costs associated with
shipping their robot to and from the Championship.  Only teams
officially registered to attend the Championship will have their
shipments home covered by the FedEx Donation

FW: **FIRST EMAIL**/ Let the Lunacy Begin!

Greetings Teams:

When Neil Armstrong placed his left foot on the surface of the moon July
21, 1969,  he took "one small step for man and one giant leap for
mankind."  This Thursday, February 26, history will be made again when
the *18th* /FIRST/ Robotics Competition gets underway with the 2009
*"*LUNACY^TM *"* competition! We are so glad you are with us to compete
and celebrate during this momentous season!

We know there will be questions that come up once the regionals start.
The following will help you know how to reach us during the events and
make sure your questions don't get "stuck in orbit!"

·      *Rules or Scoring Questions - *Drivers and RoboCoaches *must
*contact the Head Referee with these after a field reset has been
signaled.  And, once the Head Referee has made a decision, the *decision
is FINAL!  /FIRST/ will not overturn any Head Referee decisions*.  Full
details on this can be found in *Sections 7* and* 9 *(7.3.7 and 9.5.2)
of the *FRC Competition Manua**l*, "The Game" and "The Tournament"
respectively.  We urge you all to read this so there is no confusion
over this point.

·      *Other Questions (besides Rules or Scoring):**  *Contact Pit
Administration at the event. You may also contact Team Support* at
/FIRST/ Headquarters

·      *General Event and Season Feedback: / /*/FIRST/ will arrange to
collect season feedback after the events via local Team Forums or
through an alternate method. We will notify you well in advance so you
can make your plans - stay tuned!

·      *Team Stories: *We know there will also be remarkable stories
that unfold at each regional.  If you have a story to share with the
/FIRST/ community, please send it to *marketing@usfirst.org
<mailto:firststories@usfirst.org>.*   We will collect and share your
stories throughout the year.

·      *Unresolved Issues:* If you still have a question or concern that
did not get resolved at your event, you may contact Team Support as
indicated below.* * Please remember FRC staff will be traveling in
support of the events, and if your question requires their input, you
may not get an immediate reply.  We will do our best to get you an
answer as soon as possible!

***During the Event Season, Team Support* *will be available during
regular business hours (8:30 am-5:00 pm EST) Monday-Wednesday, with
extended hours to 8:00 pm EST Thursday and Friday, and Saturday from
12:00 pm-5:00 pm EST.  Team Support can be reached at
frcteams@usfirst.org <mailto:frcteams@usfirst.org> or by calling
603-666-3906, ext. 0.

Finally, we ask you to remember that the events are heavily supported by
volunteers, not just /FIRST /staff.  They will be giving their time and
effort toward making your event experience a success, and without them
/FIRST /events could not happen.   We thank you all in advance for your
gracious behavior toward the volunteers.  Please give each volunteer a
warm "Hello!" and "Thank You!" - it will be appreciated by all!

We look forward to providing you with a quality experience and seeing
you at the events!

Good luck to all.  *Let the Lunacy Begin!** **/

FW: AZ FIRST teams- Intern opportunity for COFES 2009 event to be held in April 2009 -You must apply by March 18, 2009 for this internship opportunity!- see information below

 Greetings Arizona FRC Teams:

We have an amazing opportunity for two individuals from Arizona-based
FIRST FRC teams.

Cyon Research, a software industry analyst firm, is extending this
unique internship opportunity to Arizona's best and brightest young
talent.  This is the second year where Cyon Research will award a full
COFES Internship to two exceptional students who have demonstrated
extraordinary aptitude and drive for science and technology to
participate as an intern in COFES 2009 and gain valuable insight and
networking contacts, all the while demonstrating their skills and
preparedness for a career in these fields.

This is a tremendous opportunity for eager youth to be introduced to key
industry executives, analysts, designers, engineers, and many other
influential professionals.

We hope you pass this on to your team.

Respectfully,

Carol Popovich and Steve Sanghi

FIRST Arizona Regional Co-Chairs

COFES Internships Available for Arizona FIRST FRC Students

COFES takes place against the breathtaking backdrop of Scottsdale,
Arizona and is a highly prestigious, much-anticipated event.
Participation at COFES is by invitation only and is limited to 300
senior executives, many from the companies that support FIRST.  As a
COFES Intern, you may share a breakfast table with Carl Bass, CEO of
Autodesk; Jeff Ray, CEO of SolidWorks; or Bill Carrelli, VP of Siemens
PLM. You might sit in on a discussion and hear Bob McNeel, CEO of Robert
McNeel Associates (the Rhino folks); or Michael Campbell, Senior VP of
PTC address the link between games and simulation.  These folks are not
our speakers - they're our attendees.

To see who's going to be there, take a look at
http://cofes.com/participants <http://cofes.com/participants> . To see
what they're going to be doing, take a look at http://cofes.com/agenda
<http://cofes.com/agenda> . And to get a flavor of the event, take a
look at http://cofes.com/photos <http://cofes.com/photos> .

The COFES Internship

This is your time to shine!

You will be responsible for helping us put on the event. In exchange,
you get the opportunity to rub elbows with current industry leaders, and
hear and see what is going on during the event.

According to an intern from last year's COFES:

"Volunteering as a conference intern provided me with the opportunity to
connect with industry experts right away. Even before the conference had
started, I had the opportunity to sit down with some of the early
pioneers of engineering software. I worked alongside incredibly talented
students from other universities to help setup the event, had great fun
and made friendships along the way. The conversations and connections I
made were of relevance not only to my academic research, but to my
professional development as well."

The Process

Find the form at http://apply.cofes.com <http://apply.cofes.com/>  and
fill it out by March 18, 2009

APPLICATIONS RECEIVED AFTER WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18 WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

Because this is the form used for ALL applications to COFES, you must
enter "FIRST INTERNSHIP" in the notes section so that we can identify
you as an internship award candidate.

In addition to the contact information, you must respond to the first
and last questions. Questions two and three are optional.  For the last
question, please provide us with the name, phone number, and email of a
teacher or mentor who has worked closely with you and can speak to your
abilities and character, and why they believe you should be a part of
COFES 2009.

We will base our award on your response to the first question, but we
may also consider your other responses, if provided.

On Monday, March 23 we will contact the references of the top two
candidates and, once we have verified their status, we will notify the
awardees.

Rules

1.       Unfortunately, our current situation does not allow us to offer
this award to students of all ages. We hope to address this issue for
next year. In the meantime, you must be at least 18 years of age as of
April 15, 2009 in order to be eligible for the COFES 2009 Internship.

2.       We must receive your application no later than March 18, 2009

3.       You must be available to be at the event from noon, Wednesday,
April 15, through 6 pm Sunday April 19.

4.       We will provide you with housing, meals, official shirts, and a
wonderful opportunity. You must be willing to lend a hand when asked and
to follow direction.

5.       You will be responsible for your own travel to the resort.

6.       Cyon Research does not have the resources to handle phone calls
from prospective applicants. If you have a specific question that has
not been addressed here, please send an email to FIRST@cofes.com
<mailto:FIRST@cofes.com>  and we will do our best to reply promptly.

Hey everyone - I was just too sick today to make it in sorry! I am
going to the doctor today though and should hopefully be back for our
meeting on Thursday. Don't forget to work on the shirts! We need to
get that taken care of soon. Also, if you still want to meet you can
ask another teacher (like Ms. Helbert or Mr. Baker) to let you in the
room so you can get some stuff done. We still need to work on the
programming for the robot, getting Panthasaurus running, fundraising
etc. I'll see you all on Thursday! Officers, we'll have a lunch
meeting on Thursday since we missed the others....

2009 FIRST Scholarship News – February Update

Greetings Teams,

We have added ten NEW SCHOLARSHIPS since last month!  There are now 130 FIRST scholarship providers who are offering college scholarships to students on FRC teams.  Many of these are still available for the fall of 2009.  So be sure to check out the FIRST Scholarship web page (at www.usfirst.org/scholarships) and follow the link to the 2009 FIRST Scholarship Opportunities.   Hint: You can sort the scholarship list by application deadline date by clicking on the Deadline column header.

New scholarships that have been added recently:

  • DeVry University is generously offering four (4) half-tuition scholarships (valued up to $32,500 over 9 semesters) and 25 scholarships for $1,500/semester (renewable up to $13,500 over 9 semesters) for any course of study.  There are over 90 DeVry campuses throughout the US and Canada.  Application deadline is 5/1/09.

  • University of Wisconsin-Madison is offering two scholarships for $1,500/year renewable up to $7,500 over five years.  These scholarships are for study of any engineering discipline in their College of Engineering. Preference will be given to women or students from underrepresented racial/ethnic minority groups. Application deadline is 3/15/2009.
  • Virginia Tech/BAE Systems is offering one scholarship for $2,500/year renewable up to $10,000.  This scholarship is for a female in her Junior year of high school who wants to attend Virginia Tech and study engineering.  Application deadline is 4/1/2009.

  • Purdue University/BAE Systems has added an additional $10,000 scholarship to their offering.   They now are offering three scholarships, one for $15,000 and two for $10,000, payable over four years. (This is a correction to last month’s announcement.) The application deadline has been extended to 3/1/2009.
  • Purdue University-Computer Science - The application deadline has been extended to 4/1/2009.
  • University of Arizona/BAE Systems has added another scholarship and will now award two (2) scholarships for $2,500/year. Application deadline is 4/30/2009.
  • University of New Hampshire/BAE Systems has added another scholarship and will now award two (2) scholarships for $2,500/year. Application deadline is 3/1/2009.

Scholarship Advice

  • Remember that some scholarships go unawarded because no one applies for them.  If you fit the eligibility requirements for a scholarship, go for it!
  • Pay attention to those application deadline dates.  There are close to 50 scholarships whose applications are due during the next month.

What if you have just missed the application deadline date?  Call the school or organization and ask if they will accept a late application. Some schools will accept applications even after the deadline date.   It certainly can’t hurt to ask!

Greetings Teams :

Have you been reading Bill’s Blog? http://frcdirector.blogspot.com/  Go check it out!

Bill has posted a lot of information lately, including a reminder that if you choose, you may withhold up to 40 pounds of components when you pack up your robot (incidentally, the new control system fits nicely into the 40 pound limit and there’s no rule against continuing to program the system while you wait), the suggestion that you bring a laptop with the development environment loaded onto it to your Regional and the recommendation that you load the latest software updates on your cRIO before you get there.

Visit Bill’s blog for more details and look for the new software updates at www.usfirst.org/frccontrolsystem <http://www.usfirst.org/frccontrolsystem>.

FW: Scholarships not presented in 2008

Subject: Scholarships not presented in 2008

Last year, as in previous years, there were a number of colleges and
universities that had available /FIRST/ Scholarships that did not get
offered to any /FIRST/ students. This could be for a variety of
reasons. Perhaps the school received no qualified applicants, or they
awarded a higher value scholarship to those /FIRST/ students that
applied, or it might have been a new scholarship, offered for the first
time and therefore students were not familiar with the scholarship.

If any students are interested in attending any of the
schools listed below, and they meet the specific eligibility
requirements, please encourage them to apply for the 2009 /FIRST/
Scholarship. The odds of winning these scholarships are excellent!

Let's not let these generous scholarship offers go to waste.

* * Colorado State University (CO) -- deadline 3/1
* * Colorado Technical University-Denver (CO) -- deadline 6/20
* * DePaul University (IL) -- deadline 3/1
* * ITT Technical Institute (32 campuses throughout the US)
-- deadline 4/10
* * Molloy College (NY) -- deadline 3/1
* * Montclair State University (NJ) -- deadline 3/1 (four
*full *scholarships!)
* * New Hampshire Technical Institute (NH) -- deadline 6/30
* * New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJ) -- deadline 4/1
* * Pace University (NY) -- deadline 4/1
* * Pennsylvania College of Technology (PA) -- deadline 7/1
* * Schoolcraft College (MI) -- deadline 7/1
* * Temple University (PA) -- deadline 3/1
* * University of Nebraska-Lincoln (NE) -- deadline 3/2
* * Washtenaw Community College (MI) -- deadline 6/10

Detailed descriptions of each scholarship, including eligibility
requirements, scholarship application, and links to the school, can be

FW: **FIRST EMAIL**/Chairman's, Website and Woodie Flowers Award Submission Deadline Reminders and Helpful Information

Science Department Instructional Leader

Panther Robotics Coach

Maryvale High School

From: FRC Teams [mailto:frcteams@usfirst.org]
Sent: Thursday, February 12, 2009 1:09 PM
Subject: **FIRST EMAIL**/Chairman's, Website and Woodie Flowers Award Submission Deadline Reminders and Helpful Information

Greetings Teams:

Award Submission (via www.firstawards.org) Deadlines:

Website Design Award:     02/12/2009 @11:59pm EST - tonight!
Chairman's Award:             02/19/2009 @11:59pm EST
Woodie Flowers Award:    02/19/2009 @11:59pm EST

In an effort to further assist you with successful submissions, please read the following most common issues encountered.

Scenario 1

"The submission form did not take.  By the time it did, the deadline was passed by 1 or 2 minutes."

Teams must allow for enough time should any technical issues occur.  We cannot stress this enough.  Please note the clock used on the site for the awards submissions is synchronized to an atomic clock and is highly accurate.  There will be NO extensions for late submissions of this type.

Scenario 2

"I believe that I have made a horrendous mistake...I managed to not submit our Chairman's Application because I failed to actually go to the submit page."

You must press the "Final Submit" button.  This is critical, and if not done, your submission will not go through!  We urge all teams to double check if there are any question as to whether or not they have a valid submission.  There will be NO extensions for teams who fail to press the "Final Submit" button.

Scenario 3

"I just tried to submit the Chairman's Award, and for the last 2 hours every time I hit the "save and proceed" button I would be re-routed to the login page and everything typed in was erased.  I would then have to re-type everything and try again.  After three complete tries and no more time, I had to stop."

Should your team encounter any such issue you must contact firstawards.org to let them know immediately.  Do not wait until after the deadline to do so!  There will be no extensions if firstawards.org is not properly notified prior to the deadline regarding a technical issue of this type.

Extension Exception - Should there be a technical issue with firstawards.org itself, FIRST will consider extension requests for teams adversely affected.  However, teams must notify firstawards.org with a complete description of the issue encountered prior to the deadline.

Scenario 4

"I lost my password and have requested it several times with no response.  Since firstawards.org failed to send me my password, I would like to have an extension so that our team can submit our entry."

Some e-mail providers will mark these automated e-mails as spam and filter them out of their inboxes.  If you request your password and don't get a response, you need to check your spam and/or trash folders for these e-mails.  Do not assume it is due to firstaward.org not being responsive.  If you still do not find them in these areas, please contact support@firstawards.org for support.  Remember to allow enough time for firstawards to respond to you (i.e., do not wait until the last minute)

IMPORTANT:  Please bear in mind if you wait until the last hour or minutes prior to the deadline to submit, there is the potential for many simultaneous requests for "immediate" help, with limited resources at firstawards.org to handle.

We highly encourage all teams to submit for these prestigious awards, and wish you the best of luck with your submissions!

FW: **FIRST EMAIL**/Awards Deadline Reminders

Greetings Teams:

Here is a reminder of upcoming award deadlines. To submit for one of these awards, go to www.firstawards.org.

Website Design Award:     02/12/2009 @11:59pm EST
Chairman's Award:             02/19/2009 @11:59pm EST
Woodie Flowers Award:    02/19/2009 @11:59pm EST

Important:  Please note these deadlines are firm!  In fairness to all teams who submit correctly and on time, we are unable to allow extension requests.  The only condition under which an extension request will be considered is if there is a major technical issue with the www.firstawards.org site itself, and this will depend on when it occurred and its duration.

Bear in mind technical (i.e., connectivity, loss of power, computer freezes, etc.) issues often occur and can potentially impact completion of your submission.   You will need to allow enough time to trouble shoot these issues - do not wait until just before deadline time to submit! The www.firstawards.org site is designed with an atomic clock stamp.  Any award submitted after the deadline time will not be accepted.

Did I submit correctly?

If you are unsure as to whether or not you have submitted, you can log back on to www.firstawards.org and double check.

For each entry that has been submitted, you will clearly see 'SUBMITTED' in big bold letters on the awards submittal box.  You can view a screen shot example at http://www.usfirst.org/community/frc/content.aspx?id=4624

In the case of the Woodie Flowers Award and/or the Regional Chairman's Award, click on the award to view the submission.  We encourage teams to save a copy of this submission on their computers and print it out for their records in case it should be needed in the future.  If you have clicked "Submit" and the screen does not show your submission, you must contact support@firstawards.org immediately.

Tip! You can log into www.firstawards.org and make edits to your Woodie Flowers Award and Regional Chairman's Award entries prior to the deadlines.  However, once you click  the "Submit" button, the submission process is complete (i.e., you can no longer edit your entry.) Pressing "Submit" is final.

Don't forget to click the "Submit" button when done or your submission will not be complete!

Rookie All Star Award Special Note
Rookie teams who want their submission to be considered by the judges for the Rookie All Star award need to print a copy and take it to the regional events with them to give to the judges when visited in the Pit.  NASA Grant teams should always retain a copy of this file in their team records.
